How to Make Stone Soup: Thoughts on Rural Collaboration in an Age of Fewer Resources, Higher Workloads, and Piecemeal Funding

In today's economic climate, collaboration among service providers isn't just an ideal, it's a necessity. The Joint Interagency Group from the San Luis Valley reflects on their journey of collaboration. They will share their efforts in coming together to work smarter and more efficiently to produce better outcomes for youth, their families, and the community at large.

Do you have a strategic project that is sitting on the shelf because your agency doesn’t have the skills in-house, or the staff capacity to move it forward? Spend some time with experts from Metro Volunteers to learn ways to expand your ability to deliver programs or services by successfully engaging Boomers, skilled volunteers, job seekers and other volunteers.

The session will discuss ways to help agencies develop capacity-expanding volunteer projects that save money and ease the burden on staff. Learn about Boomers, younger volunteers, and skilled volunteers and how best to engage each of these assets in your mission-oriented work. You’ll review trends and demographics, distinguish volunteer engagement from volunteer management, and learn key techniques to cultivate and mobilize volunteers as a vital resource in your organization.

Bumper Crop? How to Measure Your Results

This session will discuss various ways to measure programs to better present outcomes to current and potential funding sources. Today's funders are savvy and desire to see their dollars at work. A great story opens the door, but real outcomes close the deal.

Where Are Your Beans? Reviewing Financial Statements: Level 1

Speaker: Julie Lerudis
Are you a bit confused when you look at your nonprofit's financials? Would you like to have a better understanding of the financial reports discussed during your board meetings? This is a session for anyone who is not sure of, or wants a refresher on how to interpret basic nonprofit financial statements.
 

Marketing & Branding on a Shoestring

Speakers: Mark Schoenecker & Hew Hallock
How community organizations connect with like minds - volunteers, clients, supporters - and present themselves to the public is key their success. In this session, learn how to use social media (Facebook, Twitter, the Web) to grow your reach and message in the community, and learn how to work with local media outlets like newspaper and radio.

Life Between the San Juans and the Sangres: Focus on the Region (Funders Session)

Speakers: Michael Wisdom, Reginaldo ("Reg") G. Garcia, Ph.D & Mark Swart
The region is often characterized as the poorest and most underserved in the state. This session for funders will provide an overview of what the six-county San Luis Valley looks like - who lives here, where they work, what services they rely on, results of a 2010 adult health survey, and what community based efforts are working to improve the lives of residents of the Valley.

Building Community Together: Local Government - Nonprofit Relationships

The relationships between local nonprofit organizations and local governments has grown in past decades into one of shared responsibilities and funding, creating a greater need for cooperation and collaboration. Learn how this close relationship can be better understood and enhanced, and about funding for nonprofit organizations that provide services to low-income populations through the San Luis Valley's Community Services Block Grant program.

Unidentified Future Objectives: Mission Driven Strategic Planning

Speaker: Carol Nickell & Roni Wisdom
Sustainable growth of an organization is a result of strategic planning that includes stakeholders and key personnel. Effective planning requires a strategic process that examines critical issues from core values of the organization to implementation and evaluation of the plan. Roni Wisdom and Carol Nickell have extensive program design and implementation experience and will provide you with an overview of the core components of developing a mission-driven plan. This will be a hands on interactive session; be ready to have some fun.

Alligators & Tilapia: Defining Roles & Responsibilities of Board Members

Having an effective board takes finding and matching board member skills with the skills your organization needs. Come discuss the roles and responsibilities of board members, the overall nominating process and how to engage new members. We’ll share tips for great meetings and  helping you create the board that can achieve more.

Tools to Hit the Mother Lode:  The Colorado Common Grant Application & Finding Funding on the Web

Speakers: Erin Binford & Latia Shaw
This presentation focuses on key areas of the Colorado Common Grant Application and provides best practices and key recommendations that grant makers are seeking in successful proposals. You will also have the opportunity to explore Colorado's premier prospect research tool, the online Colorado Grants Guide, to quickly identify foundations and corporations that fund in your program areas.

Barn-Raising: Talk to the Capital Campaign Experts

Speakers: Lisa Flores & Julie Lerudis
Representatives from the Gates Family Foundation and the Boettcher Foundation will be available to answer questions to help guide you as you work your way through the capital campaign process, to help you understand best practices, and to share information about successful campaigns.

Story Telling as Best Practice: Workshop with Andy Goodman Ever since we began talking to each other, telling stories has been the most powerful way to capture attention, engage an audience, and motivate them to act. Steadily advancing technology keeps handing us shiny new tools to communicate faster and farther – think iPhones and Twitter to name just two – but in our fervor to remain current (and appear professional) we often ignore our natural inclination to tell a good story. In “Storytelling as Best Practice,” Andy Goodman will explain why he believes storytelling remains the single most powerful communication tool you possess, and he will offer specific ways your organization can use stories to advance your mission.

A Road Map to Bring Resources to Your Community: Strategic Partnerships Between Local Government and Nonprofits

Speaker: Mike Roque & Teri Erickson
Panel discussion with Mike Roque who helped develop the Department of Strategic Partnerships in Denver and a native of the San Luis Valley. Mike will facilitate a panel of individuals who have had huge successes by working strategically through community partnerships between government, nonprofits, and for profit entities to make the community not only function better, but flourish in some of the hardest financial times in history.
