Board Chair/Executive Director Relationship

Join Bill Smith, the current board president for the Creed Repertory Theater, and Carol Nickell, Executive Director of Community Resource Center to explore what can be a mystery to many: shared leadership between the board chair and the ED. We all know how the interactions between a board president and an executive director can make or break the successful operations of a governing board and ultimately the organization. The level of trust, respect and understanding of each other’s roles within the agency is vital to building rapport and to running the board smoothly. How do you establish the foundation for a strong working relationship? What are the responsibilities of each position? Communication: what works and what doesn’t? Goal setting and Executive Director evaluation; Transfer of leadership; Feedback techniques; Succession Planning; all food for thought! 

Diversity & Inclusiveness Practices

Join Jennifer Silva, LCSW to share and learn about best practices in the workplace. Jennifer is a San Luis Valley native with a masters degree in social work from the University of Michigan. She assists with cultural competency trainings for Valley-Wide Health Systems, Inc. where she also serves as a high-risk case manager.

Arts & Culture
Location: Hauck Gallery 313-315 4th Street
Elizabeth Zurn from the Creede Reperatory Theater will lead an open forum for people working in the arts and culture arena.  She will facilitate discussion regarding best practices in Fundraising, Marketing and other issues that face Arts Organizations in the San Luis Valley.

San Luis Valley Community Health Survey Results
Location: Mountain Valley School 403 Pitkin Avenue
Reginaldo (“Reg”) Garcia, PhD, the San Luis Valley Program Director of the Rocky Mountain Prevention Center and Mark Swart, the data collection coordinator for the Rocky Mountain Prevention Research Center will share the results of a random sample of 1,187 adult health surveys representing all 6 counties of the San Luis Valley collected between June and December 2010. Respondents answered over 200 wide-ranging questions about their health, diseases, and behavior. Community engagement methods and valley-wide and county-level findings will be presented and discussed.

Mental Health Care
Location: Methodist Church Fellowship Hall 6th Street (between Christy & San Juan)
Join Linda Reiner, MPH, Director of Planning and Evaluation at Caring for Colorado. Linda will share findings from the newly released 2011 report The Status of Mental Health Care in Colorado and explore with attendees the implications for the San Luis Valley. Participants will be asked to share their current efforts in providing mental health services in the Valley as well as discuss access to care issues, service gaps, opportunities, and new promising approaches in the field of mental health.
 

Early Childhood Opportunities

Early childhood education has taken center stage in Colorado and nationally.  Join us for a conversation about what that means to families and programs in the San Luis Valley.  Join Erin Binford, Program Officer from the Temple Buell Foundation to cover a number of topics, including program quality, professional development, parent and family engagement, and the transition from early learning classrooms to kindergarten.

Youth Programs

An open forum for people working with youth in the Valley, facilitated by Matt Carpenter, Vice President of Programs at El Pomar and Chris Ellis, Program Associate at El Pomar.

Civic Engagement & Volunteerism

Join Luke Yoder from the Center of Restorative Programs.  Discussion will look at how to recruit, train, steward and recognize volunteers. Luke will facilitate discussion regarding civic engagement and best practices for individuals and groups to identify and address issues of public concern.

Animals Among Us
Location: Catholic Church 5th Street & Hwy 285 (Gunnison)
This is an open forum for people working with animals. Share your experience and learn from others. The conversation will be facilitated by lisa knaggs. An Austin, Texas, native, lisa has spent most of her 40-something years living and learning from dogs.  Her first career was producing Visual Effects in Hollywood for many of the largest budgeted projects during the 1990's.  Her organic dog treat business, Bark for Peace!, helped set the standard for safe, healthy, human-grade dog treats in sustainable packaging. Now peacefully residing on a historic working ranch along the banks of the Rio Grande, she is the only certified canine massage therapist in the San Luis Valley.  Through her business Relax your Dog™, she volunteers with under-served populations, actively fosters dogs in preparation for adoption, offers in-home training and behavior consultations, and actively shares these stories thru various social media outlets.  Additionally, lisa is a long-term locavore, active in the SLV Local Foods Coalition, on the Board of Directors for the Valley Food Co-op, and is the Outreach Director for the Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust 501(c)(3), the only local land trust serving all six counties of the San Luis Valley.
