September 17: Community Tours
Economic and Cultural Growth, South Fork, CO
9:15 am to 4:00 pm
This full day of action in the oldest - and we think - the most wonderful - town in Colorado will provide a comprehensive view of issues affecting the San Luis Valley. Your day will start with Pat Richmond giving you a verbal picture of the history of the Valley dotted with humorous stories from our past. She is a noted historian who shares colorful vignettes. You will be face to face with Mount Blanca on the drive from Alamosa. First stop is the Fort Garland Museum for an introduction to the Museums of the Valley by Rick Manzanares, the Director. Rick will also share our progress on becoming a National Heritage Area. Chuck Tidds of our San Luis Valley Heritage Tourism Project will ride to San Luis with you. We believe that becoming more savvy about tourists is one of our greatest challenges.
The morning issue presentations will focus on Water, Agriculture, Alternative Energy, the Arts and Economic Development. Our Arts Panel features artists who have achieved their dream of combining art and successful business practices. We have some plans for the future of art in the Valley Lunch will be absolutely scrumptuous with foods from Costilla County. Our beef and lamb are out of this world. During the meal we will have a performance from the Creede Repertory Theater - one of the Valley’s treasures.
The afternoon panel will focus on the environment throughout the Valley - threats and opportunities. We will have four speakers - each approaching the issue from a different perspective. They represent the San Luis Valley Ecosystem Council, The Nature Conservancy, the San Luis Valley Water Conservancy District (Restoring the Rio Grande, and the Development Resources Group.
On your trip home there will be a short stop at the Rio Grande River where Roberto Martinez will share what’s happening with our great river. Yes, it will be an exciting day! You will meet some great people who will share their passion with you. AND lunch will be a very special experience.
